This event was broadcast on national TV at the time, with myself and several others in the crowd recording the event. Others had very early VHS Camcorders, but I did not possess such a ‘new fangled’ device 😫, I had to use my 16mm Bolex H16 Cine Camera that had a clockwork mechanism. The spring kept winding down at the most in-opertune moments though! Hence the frequent interruptions during each race, which I covered with a transition and sometimes a ‘cutaway’ shot.
It’s possible that this video may be a sole survivor of the ravages of time, as video tape (especially VHS tape) would deteriorate and most likely be un-playable by now! Also, in the 1970’s broadcast companies used to routinely wipe their old tapes so that they could re-use them on future programmes.
Much later, in the 1990’s, with the original film being projected on to a large white screen and the projector running at half speed, [so as to reduce the usual ‘flicker’], the event was transferred to Mini-DV tape. This was then later imported into a computer for digital editing using Avid Media Composer, and then speeded up 2x in the edit in order to compensate for the projector being run at half speed during the capture process.
